3 Tips for Restful Sleep

Updated: Aug 1, 2020

7 hours of sleep per night is what is considered to be "optimal" for adults (18 and older). According to the CDC, 1 in 3 adults get enough sleep. Most of us are walking zombies and truly struggle to get enough rest. I personally think technology is one of the biggest contributors to sleep struggles. When I turn off my wifi and leave my phone out of the room I sleep SO much better. I hope to set that example for my little girl too. Kids today will not experience life without the iPhone. But I digress.

Sleep can help you combat anxiety and overall benefit your health. So what are some natural tools to get the best sleep of your life?

1. Get a real alarm clock.

Grab a cutie alarm clock from Amazon. Charge your phone outside of your room and turn your wifi off at night. Studies conducted by the Sleep Health Foundation reported that screen time actually delays your body from producing melatonin (sleep hormone released before bed) by an hour an a half. Parent your phone instead. Put your phone "to bed" (don't look at it) for 1-2 hours before you put yourself to bed and don't check it for 1-2 hours after you wake up.

2. Try magnesium or chamomile tea before bed.

Relax and unwind before bed with a magnesium supplement or a cozy cup of chamomile tea. My doula gave me a delicious magnesium drink (find the link here on Amazon) for early labor to help me relax.

Young Living also makes a fantastic magnesium supplement for kids that I started taking at night. This promotes a state of calmness that can be beneficial before bed. The item is called KidScents Unwind (Want to try it? Learn more about joining my Young Living community here or use my member ID when you order: 14071865).

3. Make a DIY Sleep Roller.

I made this DIY roller for my friend Nena (she manages a fun Instagram account all about farmhouse home decor - so cute!). I always recommend reusing old essential oil bottles before buying new, but Amazon has several great options if you're wanting to DIY your own essential oil rollers. Oil and Glass is a great resource for a DIY book as well.

Here's what I used to make this DIY Sleep Roller:

-Grapeseed Oil

-10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

-10 drops Seedlings Calm Essential Oil

-10 drops Copaiba Essential Oil

Lavender is a well known sleep support that has been used for centuries. According to thesleepdoctor.com, "lavender interacts with the neurotransmitter GABA to help quiet the brain and nervous system activity, reducing agitation, anger, aggression, and restlessness." Pretty amazing, right?

Seedlings' Calm is a blend of Lavender EO, Geranium EO, Coriander EO, Bergamot EO and Ylang Ylang EO. Seedlings' Calm is specifically diluted down for babies. Watch a video here to learn more.

The final ingredient is Copaiba Essential Oil. Copaiba is distilled from the resin of the Brazilian Copaifera tree. The oil has a very light scent and is wonderful mixed with other essential oils to intensify the benefits of the other oils. In this sleep roller, Copaiba will help intensify the benefits of the calming sleep support oils. Copaiba also contains 60% more beta-caryophyllene (helps block pain receptors in the brain) than CBD oil. Read more ideas for suggested use like using Copaiba for Beard Oil here.
