Since myself and family have been creating a low-zero waste home, I've learned how important it is to be self reliant. From starting a garden, learning home remedies or making my own cleaners, has taught me patience whilst reaching goals of living sustainably. As a family our journey has expanded into several eco-friendly swaps and homemade remedies. It's a beautiful feeling to gain new knowledge and know that my family and earth are being cared for. Self care has always been an important part of my life and remembering that self care is not an expense but an investment. Creating something as simple as homemade lavender and lemon lotion bars brightens my day, keeps toxins out of my life and waste out of landfills. Lavender and lemon go together like peanut butter and jam.
Lavender does not require a lot of water and is drought tolerant. Harvest lavender as it blooms throughout the summer, and prune back by a third each fall. One could harvest lavender any time during the day. Cut lavender flowers before the buds open for the best fragrance and flavor. One could also harvest lavender after it's bloomed, but the oils won’t be as strong.
Lavender is lovely to look at and is good for bees and other pollinators. Besides bees, it also attracts butterflies and other beneficial insects. Lavender is used as a medicinal plant and can be made into a herbal salve. Lavender infused oil is a must have in our home, the scent can aid in calming and relaxing the mind and body.
Whilst I think of Summer, bright yellow lemons come to mind. Scientists have traced the roots of citrus fruits to the Himalayas, however, the true origin of the lemon is unknown, yet there is strong belief that the lemon may be from northwestern India. Lemons are among some of the most versatile fruits on earth. From sunny flavor in desserts to preserving or cleaning; in particular, lemons play an essential role in our home. Two of my go to natural cleaners consist of lemons and baking soda whilst removing bacteria and odor, so ditch the bleach and use lemon juice instead. Lemons are also healing and have been associated with beauty, whilst being used on the skin, nails and hair. Keeping my skin moist and healthy is an important part to my personal self care routine. Homemade is the best made and this simple recipe to create lavender and lemon lotion bars will bring joy to one's heart and hands.
4 tbsp beeswax or candelilla wax [vegan]
3 tbsp mango butter or shea butter
1-2 tsp coconut oil
1 tbsp dried lavender flowers [optional]
In a pot or double boiler over the stove, melt together the beeswax coconut oil and mango butter on low heat. Once blended remove from heat and add essential oils and lavender flowers [optional]. Pour lotion mixture into the silicone mold. Let the mixture solidify for an hour at room temperature or 20 minutes in the refrigerator. Once the lotion bars are soild, remove and store in a sealed container. Cheers to your very own homemade lotion bars!
