DIY Make Up Brush Cleaner

Updated: May 9, 2020

I used to work at Sephora (such a FUN job) and was in the habit of cleaning all the store's make up brushes every single night before we closed up the shop. You would think based on my prior experience that I would routinely clean my own make up brushes, but I have not been very faithful to actually cleaning my own.

I finally was motivated to clean my brushes and created a simple DIY Make Up Brush Cleaner using my beloved Thieves Household Cleaner.

If you haven't heard of the Thieves Cleaner you are truly missing out! Thieves costs about 20 cents per 16 oz bottle, actually cleans (we've all tried natural cleaners that just didn't work) and is 100% plant based (no harsh chemicals).

What you may not realize about the Thieves Cleaner is that you can use the Thieves concentrate to create some outside the box items like...yep, you guessed it...Make Up Brush Cleaner!!

As always, I recommend upcycling a glass jar to make your DIYs. Any chance I can to combine my low-tox and low-waste efforts is a win!

Here's what you need to get started:

~upcycled glass jar

~distilled water

~1 capful Thieves concentrate

Follow the following steps for magical, clean brushes:

Step 1: Combine the water and 1 capful of Thieves concentrate in your glass jar.

Step 2: Allow your dirty make up brushes to soak in the DIY Make Up Brush Cleaner for about an hour.

Step 3: Remove make up brushes from the DIY cleaner and allow them to air dry.

Step 4: Blot your make up brushes on an old rag to remove any excess make up residue that may still be on the brushes.

Once your make up brushes are completely dry then you are ready to use again!

Don't have the Thieves Cleaner concentrate on hand? Try this recipe instead!

Adapted DIY Brush Cleaner recipe:

~distilled water

~1/8 cup unscented castille soap

~1 teaspoon baking soda

~15 drops Thieves Essential Oil

Now you are ready to apply your make up with beautifully clean make up brushes!!
